Super Bowl LI (2017)

The Atlanta Falcons squandered a game-changing opportunity.

There is no other way to characterise the team’s Super Bowl LI loss to the New England Patriots at NRG Stadium in Houston. Atlanta permitted the largest comeback in Super Bowl history, as the Patriots rallied back with 31 unanswered points to win 34-28 in overtime.

With 8:31 left in the fourth quarter, everything began to come apart. Atlanta still led 28-12 and controlled the ball. Kyle Shanahan, the coordinator and future coach of the San Francisco 49ers, called a pass play on 3rd-and-1 from the Falcons’ 36-yard line.

Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for the 4th time, becoming the oldest player to do so at 39.

The overall TV viewership for Lady Gaga’s halftime show was higher at 117.5 million.

Several media publications have called the contest the best Super Bowl of all time.

In NFL.com’s “100 Greatest Games,” it was ranked ninth, the fourth-highest among Super Bowls.
